Ponni Rice is an improved white rice variety of Tamil Nadu. The grains are slender, long and dull white in colour. This parboiled semi-polished rice has 20-25% bran, good cooking quality and appearance. It can be used for daily consumption and goes very well with South India curries and gravies
The Story
Ponni rice is a cross-pollination between two traditional varieties of rice. One of its parents is Kichadi Samba Rice. During the British era, Ponni Rice used to be called GB24. It has stabilised since then and is now as good as the regular improved variety.
