What's in a name? Part-1

As we started our deep dive into heritage rices, we were fascinated with the way these rices were named. Poetic yet scientific, telling a story, carrying a history, giving us the traditional wisdom! This series is an exploration of the names of these rice varieties. We were particularly enamoured with the names of the traditional rices from Tamil Nadu. For traditional Tamil Nadu rices, the name is not just a moniker, it is also a marker, a defining identity.

In the first part of this series, we take a look at how often Tamil rice names come in two parts - The first describing the rice, the second identifying the season! Of course there are exceptions to the rule, there are rices with single names and rices with an entirely different second name..that's a story for another post.

So we hope you will learn to love and know these rices a little more. Taste them, cook them , look for them , recommend them to friends and family.
