Illuppai Poo Samba is a traditional fragrant variety of rice from Tamil Nadu. This cream-coloured rice has a bit of a green tinge and is slightly sticky in texture. According to farmers, the fragrance of Illuppai Poo Samba is similar to Mahua flowers, after which it is named. The rice has a nice fragrance when soaked and cooked. It is good for making kanji, kolukattai, puttu, dosas and can be used for a variety of preparations. Steamed Illuppai Poo rice tastes great with sambar and other South Indian curries. This semi polished rice is available with 25-30% bran and is easy to cook.

This time illupai poo samba has about 20% mix, this happened as this was cultivated post red rice. So the paddy seeds that remained sprouted and joined the ilupai poo samba and this field admixture have resulted in red rice amidst the ilupai poo samba. This possibly happened

The Story

The rice is mainly grown in the Kaveri delta. According to traditional lure, Illuppai Poo Rice is called women’s rice. As part of prayer rituals every Tuesday, women make some preparation with this rice and eat it. It is believed to give them strength.

Biobasics sources Illuppai Poo Samba from two farms. One is a PGS-certified farm in Thiruvarur district. This farmer has many varieties of rice as well as Illuppai Poo Samba Our other source is a PGS-certified farm in Palakkad. This farmer enjoyed Illuppai Poo Samba when he had it at our place. So he got the seeds and started growing it. Both our sources are single-farm origin and locally milled in small quantities.

Storage

  • Once the package is opened, store the rice in an airtight container in a cool and dry place.
  • You can also refrigerate long-stored rice to retain its properties and keep it fresh.

Cook

  • Open vessel: 1 cup rice : 2-2.5 cups water. Add rice to boiling water and cook on slow flame until rice is cooked.
