Poongkar Rice is a heritage variety of rice from Tamil Nadu. It is commonly known as Women’s Rice because it provides many benefits to women. Poongkar Rice improves the health of pregnant women and builds resistance to diseases. The rice is given to women in the form of Kanji/porridge to help with normal delivery and to increase lactation after delivery. It also cures hormonal problems in women. This semi-polished, bold, red rice has 30-35% bran. When cooked, the rice has a nice nutty flavour and a slightly sticky texture. You can have it with all Indian curries. The rice is highly satiating, which means it keeps you full for longer, thus controlling hunger pangs.
The Story
Poongkar Rice is a short duration crop grown during the Kar or summer season. The paddy is harvested, aged and then milled. Bio Basics sources Poongkar Rice from an organic farmers’ group and a PGS-certified single farm in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu.
