I grew up on white polished rice. And rotis for dinner.
Never saw red rice or the Matta or boiled rice until my college days in Kerala.
Never liked the taste or the feel in the mouth of this "mota" (fat) rice.
My light, slender and soft white polished rice was my comfort food.
Until...I turned 35....
And it was then that I started experimenting with red rice, boiled rice.
After a health episode, sadly.
Most of us wake up only then.😅
Today, I swear by red rice.
I do have white polished rice, but only rarely.
On special occasions, as a Biriyani, or while eating out.
But my comfort food today is red rice or boiled rice.
Why do I like it so much now?
1. It is tastier. Eating it just like that without any accompaniments will tell you how bland white polished rice is, and how flavorful red rice is.
2. It is healthier, because of the vitamins and minerals which have not been polished away, but embedded in the bran, that gives the grain its color.
3. It fills you up faster, and you feel full for longer. After eating white polished rice, I get hungry within couple of hours. And after the meal, I still feel like I have not eaten anything. With Red Rice, and particularly the one I am recommending here, you can keep going for at least 4-5 hours before you feel like nibbling at something!
And among the red rices, my favorite (it keeps changing every year though!) currently is Thondi Matta that comes in 3 variants (low, medium and high bran) at Bio Basics.
So this is the rice I recommend if you need to control the portions of rice you eat.
Because of weight management or blood sugar issues.
Most of us love rice so much that our days are literally SAD if we don't eat at least one portion of rice.
But many folks advocate against eating too much rice.
Not without reason, given our sedentary lifestyles.
Now imagine, having just that one portion of rice, and feeling satisfied!
Makes my day! Happiness in life!
And I have had many ex-es here.
Like Kuruva, and Uma (my most recent ones).
More on those later.
Try Thondi and let us know if you feel the same love for it!
